International Baccalaureate Diploma
CAS - Creativity, Action, Service
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) is a fundamental and compulsory part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma.
CAS is a necessary requirement for passing the IB diploma, and takes into account the personal development of the individual, and the outside world.
The main aim of CAS is to help an individual develop through a series of projects that will satisfy the individual, and help the local community, or the community in other parts of the world. This brings a massive benefit to the individual, and the surrounding world.
CAS consists of three main elements: Creativity, Action and Service.
The students have to complete a minimum of 150 hours for CAS to obtain the diploma. A balance of 50 hours for each CAS element must be completed to fulfill the requirements. Failure to do so may result in not receiving the diploma, so close monitoring of the hours spent in every element of CAS is required. Ongoing discussion with the CAS coordinator will ensure that CAS elements are properly completed.
CAS is a non-academic part of the course, where no marks or grades are awarded, but instead CAS hours are collected through a variety of beneficial projects.
CAS is usually carried out in a spare time, and there are a great variety of projects that can be done that will improve the world around the individual.
Aims of CAS that the student should develop are:
- An appreciation of the potential of the human mind and spirit
- Knowledge, skills and understanding
- An awareness of humanitarian issues across the world
- A recognition that education imposes lifelong ethical responsibilities
- A willingness to inquire and an enjoyment of discovery
- Confidence in their ability to initiate change, both individually and collaboratively
- Autonomy and self/reliance
- An appreciation of their own and others talents
Even though the IB diploma has only been available at Stanborough School since 2006, the CAS element has made a difference in the Stanborough community, and also a difference to the community in other parts of the world. There will be further positive impacts in the broader community as more CAS projects are completed. Most importantly, the impact of CAS on the global community is beyond measure and assessment.
